Dental bridges FAQ
What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is three or more dental crowns that are connected together, forming a single unit. A bridge is used to fill a space from a missing tooth/missing teeth. The teeth adjacent to the space are used to cement the bridge in place.
What can I expect after getting a dental bridge?
After the successful completion of the bridge you may feel some discomfort, mild pain when biting or sensitivity to temperature changes for a few days or weeks. You can take over-the-counter pain medicine, such as Advil or Motrin to alleviate the discomfort. If these symptoms persist for more than a few weeks or are progressively becoming, please let us know.
How long will my dental bridge last?
Dental bridges generally remain functional for at least 10 years. There are a number of factors that will affect the lifespan of your dental bridge, including the amount of bridge work required, your dental hygiene routine, diet and lifestyle choices. Your dental bridge may require maintenance or replacement if your porcelain crowns or the bridge itself become prematurely worn or damaged.
How should I clean my dental bridge?
Dental bridges are cared for much as your natural teeth. You should brush your teeth, bridge and dental crowns with a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a day. After you brush, you should carefully floss around your dental crowns and natural teeth. Since there is at least one artificial tooth with a bridge, a floss threader is used to clean under this area. Keeping up with your regular checkups and professional teeth cleanings is extremely important with dental bridges.
